Black Onyx

Composition

Onyx refers to the parallel striped type of the silicate mineral chalcedony. Agate and onyx vary mainly in the manner that the stripped bands are organised: agate contains bent bands, while onyx has parallel bands. Onyx consists of a fine intergrowth of quartz and moganite.

History

Onyx has a long history of use in hardstone carving and jewelry. It was used in Egypt as early as the Second Dynasty to make bowls and other pottery items. Onyx is mentioned in the Bible many times.

The ancient Romans brought onyx amulets containing the likeness of Mars, the god of war, into battle. Onyx derives from the Latin term onyx meaning "claw" or "fingernail" since it was thought Onyx was the discarded nails of the Deity Venus.

Healing properties

Wear Onyx as a personal shield  to maintain awareness and keep your intuition sharp. It may be used to defend oneself against fears of bullying.  Place an Onyx in the office as a way of deflecting other's pessimistic or argumentative impulses, and as a method of protecting against others who are dishonest or judgmental. Onyx strengthens insight, enhances the sense of self and accelerates internal strength. Onyx can act as a natural immune booster, supplying endurance and energy to the body, and reinforcing the immune system against any potential illnesses.
